Conviction
WND Ventures, the corporate venture arm of DPR Construction, has invested in Buildcheck AI as part of the company's $12 million Series A. The round was led by Telescope Partners, with follow-on participation from existing investors Uncork Capital, Salt VC, and Xfund. Total funding to date is $18 million, raised across nine months.
The WND investment follows a structured evaluation process inside DPR that began with a limited proof of concept and expanded into pilot deployments.
"You know our process, we try things in a small scale in a proof of concept environment, and our goal is to understand if something is going to help us in a big way on our job sites," said Kaushal Diwan, board member at WND Ventures. "If things work out well then we try to do more POCs and pilots before we look at scaling it across the business."
Why the partnership matters
DPR is one of the largest technical builders in the United States, with concentrations in healthcare, life sciences, advanced technology, and higher education — project types where interdisciplinary coordination failures carry the highest cost. A corporate venture investment from a builder of that profile reflects evaluation against live project conditions rather than a thesis about the category.
Diwan pointed to the rate of technical improvement as the deciding factor.
"What was interesting with Buildcheck specifically was that its team improved capabilities very quickly," he said. "That was one good indicator of their capability to meet customer demand and in terms of what we needed out of it. When we start hitting alignment with core pieces of our strategy when it comes to design-build, that's actually a very big indicator for us that maybe it's time to open up the door for partnership."
Design-build and progressive design-build delivery shift design liability onto the contractor. That is the exact exposure Buildcheck was built to address.
What Buildcheck does
Buildcheck runs proprietary computer vision models — across drawing sets to identify errors, omissions, and cross-discipline coordination conflicts. The platform performs over 400 automated checks and surfaces findings in a shared review environment for the full project team.
Michalatos founded the company with Alex Gureev and Andrei Molchynsky after working as a mechanical and electrical manager at EllisDon on hospital design-builds.
"I was doing hospital design-builds in Canada, so obviously we would take all the design risk," Michalatos said. "We'd track both the architects and engineers, as well as the trades. I was doing MEP IT scope, all the technical scopes, which are by nature extremely interdisciplinary."
Use of funds
The Series A will fund expansion of Buildcheck's AI-assist capabilities, including in the domains of code compliance, value engineering, spec-to-drawing checks and custom checks alongside continued development of its computer vision models.
"Automated design reviews are now becoming a market standard," Michalatos said. "We're giving every project what I wished for when I was managing my own hospital design-builds: a tireless co-worker who understands everything about the project, with a seamless platform to bring everyone in one place to fix things."
