Alexander Michalatos, CEO and co-founder of Buildcheck, was named a finalist for the 2026 Site Service Awards in the Tech & Innovation category. SiteNews selected finalists across eight construction industry categories from hundreds of nominations submitted across Canada.
The Site Service Awards recognize individuals driving excellence across Canada's built environment, from electricians and HR professionals to BIM specialists and technology leaders. Winners will be announced February 26, 2026 at a ceremony in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Michalatos worked as a mechanical engineer on EllisDon's $600 million North Island Hospitals project before founding Buildcheck. He experienced the design coordination challenges that affect major construction projects firsthand, which informed Buildcheck's focus on automated design review technology.
"Alexander is relentlessly generous with founders and younger professionals in the industry," one nominator wrote. "He regularly takes calls to help others think through their ideas, even when there's nothing in it for him, because he genuinely wants better tools for construction to exist."
Michalatos graduated first in his mechanical engineering class at the University of British Columbia, receiving the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering Gold Medal for outstanding achievement. He later attended Stanford Graduate School of Business as a Fulbright Scholar.
Under his leadership, Buildcheck has grown to serve more than 50 construction organizations, including AvalonBay Communities and Boston Properties. The company recently closed a $5.9 million seed round led by Uncork Capital and has won recognition at the Cemex Construction Startup Competition, EllisDon ConTech Accelerator, and Cityscape Global.
The awards ceremony will feature finalists across categories spanning the construction industry's full spectrum of roles and specializations.
